its become a tradition to go on a beach hike the week before memorial day - you beat the crowds and amazingly you have, like cape alava a year earlier, fantastic weather. the point of arches beach on the olympic penninsula was recently rated by backpacker magazine as 'the most remote' beach in america. 2 miles of pristine, wind-swept sand, sheltered and hidden by a steep ridgeline on the makah indian reservation. getting to the beach required 3-4 hours of driving, navigating steep hillsides, and strong legs to support a full pack-hike through the sand. but god, was it ever worth it! for more photos, visit john's site at johnandkristie.com.
